![]() Every map, every zone is just pockets of enemies, chests and crafting materials. All of Godfall is just a winding series of corridors, and while the game encourages you to “explore,” I have never, ever found anything interesting while doing so. There are three realms, earth, water and air, but they are just different in terms of color palate and the nature of junk that clutters up the hallways. The game’s second biggest sin is its just outrageously poor level design. While I have done enough research to know there is some halfway decent lore behind Godfall, and I love that it’s inspired by the Stormlight Archive series of books, in-game, the story is less than an afterthought, and effectively non-existent. The entire storyline is that my character, Orin, whose gender apparently changes based on which armor I’m wearing at a given moment, is trying to stop my brother Macros from becoming a god which will also somehow destroy the world. I know that most looters are not known for their story, but there is barebones, and there is Godfall, where almost the entire narrative takes place with three characters conversing in a single room. I also experienced a lot of frame drops while playing, so its technical performance is not anything to really showcase the power and smoothness PS5, from what I’ve seen. I’m not sure if this is a Godfall problem or a misuse of haptic triggers, but this didn’t feel great, and why I mostly stuck with dodging and slashing during my time with the game. Moment to moment, Godfall is fun enough in combat, though even there I found some sticking points, like how anything having to do with the left half of my controller, bringing up my shield to block or charging up a technique attack, did not feel nearly as responsive as I hoped, requiring multiple button presses or being greeted with a full second delay. The combat system, full of the usual dodges, parries, light and heavy attacks, is solid, and yet it also does some interesting things with the soulshatter mechanic, shield throws, northern and southern technique attacks, weapon polarity switching and your character’s ultimate.
